Wool as a soil material
Wool has been used in gardens and fields for generations. Long before manufactured fertilisers, growers returned fleece and wool waste to the soil to support crops over time.
High-quality wool was reserved for clothing and textiles, while lower grade wool, like belly wool, dags, and short or soiled fleece had a different, practical role. Rather than being wasted, this wool was returned to the land where it came from, quietly supporting plant growth.
Understanding low grade wool
Low grade wool refers to fleece that is too short, dirty, or contaminated to be made into textiles. The British Wool grading system judges fleece on staple length, fineness (micron), crimp, handle, and cleanliness. In total, British Wool sorts fleece into around 100–120 different grade types based on these characteristics, each identified with a grade number that reflects its style and quality.
This often includes:
Belly wool, shorter and coarser than the main fleece
Dags, clippings removed for hygiene and animal welfare
Fleece contaminated with straw, soil, or vegetable matter
Even though it isn’t suitable for textiles, low grade wool retains the natural properties that make it valuable for soil, like slow breakdown and moisture retention.
How wool supports soil and plants
Historically, low grade wool was worked directly into growing systems. Common uses included:
- Adding it to compost heaps
- Laying it in bean furrows before planting
- Working it into potato ridges
- Using it as a mulch around plants
Wool breaks down slowly, holding moisture and releasing nutrients over time. As it decomposes:
- Nutrients are gradually released
- Soil biology is supported
- Moisture is held around plant roots
- Soil structure improves
Rather than forcing rapid growth, wool supports plants quietly, working in harmony with natural soil biology.
Wool in modern growing and Wooltiliser
